Boundaries are important in human relationships. With boundaries established, there is less chance of big problems surfacing later on.
When in a relationship, ask yourself who you are dealing with. Are you in a verbal interaction with your own or somebody else's parent, child, spouse, work colleague, acquaintance, neighbour, leader of a paid/ unpaid work group, gossip group etc.?
There are topics and choices of formality of language items deemed safe and permissible to broach with and engage in, respectively with each of those persons mentioned above.
Even within a supportive environment, caution must be exercised when dealing with different cultural groups. Boundaries of comfort level of topics vary greatly within sub-groups, as in anything else in life. Wisdom that comes with maturity of age and accumulated life experience is a highly-sought and useful factor to apply in very tenuous situations.
